Journalist and Producer

Currently working on an independent long-form print and audio project, PBS NewsHour student reporting labs mentor, and freelance for inewsource.org and KPBS.

Enterprise Reporter and Senior Producer, inewsource, San Diego (a KPBS media partner)

2013 – 2015

Report and produce multimedia investigative and enterprise reports using data analysis, online tools, primary source documents, creating long-form journalism with impact; take complex issues and break them down into meaningful stories that demonstrate how policy, laws, etc impact everyday lives. Producer for other inewsource reporters, working on bringing stories to life and creating narratives for radio and TV. See my latest project here.

Investigations Reporter and Producer, KPBS

2012 – 2013

Worked with a team of four reporters to produce multimedia investigative series, bringing story to life for radio, web, and video. Also produced and reported several enterprise reports, including When Does End of Life Begin: Hospice Under Scrutiny.

Host and Producer, KPBS Evening Edition

2011 – 2012

Conducted in-depth and hard-hitting interviews with elected officials, policy makes and community leaders. Interviews often made news, including this one about a newly elected San Diego County Superior Court Judge.

Producer, Reporter, Host, Envision San Diego, KPBS

2006  – 2011

Reporter and producer of  multi-media enterprise reporting project. Envision San Diego looked at issues such as prison healthcare, legalization of marijuana, and the failure of the whooping cough vaccine. The project consisted of radio, video, and web reports on a single issue over a period of many weeks, ending in a 30 minute documentary. The documentaries aired across California and in one case, nationally. During this time I also helped develop a weekly news show. I oversaw production, content, and developed a more integrated model for sharing our TV content on the KPBS website.

Produced radio features for CBC National Radio Programs and NPR; produced and reported San Diego firestorms (2007 and 2003) for CBC National TV and Radio; print resume includes feature stories for The National Post and Canadian Business Magazine.

1998- 2000

Prepared daily news reports and live spots for CBC TV, Calgary. Enterprise reporter for CBC radio.

Associate Producer, CBC Newsworld

1998 – 1999

Produced segments for national current affairs show.

Documentary Reporter/Producer, CBC Saskatchewan

1995 – 1998

Researched, produced, wrote, fronted short documentaries with an emphasis on investigative reporting. Was one of the first reporters to write about antibiotic resistance in Saskatchewan, demonstrating how readily doctors prescribed antibiotics by going undercover to several medical clinics . The story aired on CBC’s The National, and was picked up by the Canadian Press.
